A Phenomenal Year of Growth: 713,000 Jaxx Users

2017 was a year of enormous growth for Jaxx. We’re starting 2018 with nearly three quarters of a million confirmed, regular users of Jaxx.

At this time last year we had approximately 16,000 users on Android. Today we have around 295,000. That’s a 20 fold increase in 12 months. The growth story is very similar on our other platforms (iOS, Chrome extension, desktop, etc.).

In total there are over 713,000 regular users of Jaxx. There are 295k users on Android, 297k users on iOS, 121k users of the Chrome extension, and an uncounted number of desktop users. There are also many hundreds of thousands more people who choose to use the Jaxx software anonymously on desktop (since we don’t track users actively, in line with our stance on privacy), or who use the application infrequently (i.e. not using it within the 30 day window that we use for counting users).  In total we estimate that there may be over one million Jaxx users globally, but we prefer to give the most conservative numbers.

Start of 2017 till start of 2018: Installs on Active Devices (Android).

On iOS (iPhone primarily) we’ve seen 30x growth in “Active Last 30 Days” users, which is the measure of how many users have used our application in the last 30 days. This is an important number for us because it’s the real measure of users, as opposed to just measuring downloads. As with all cryptocurrency software, more people download our product than continue as long-term users. In total, our application was used approximately 30,000,000 times on iOS in 2017.

Because of the way iTunes tracks iOS users, we can only see the percentage of people who have opted-in to sharing data with us, and the total number of people who have shared data. By multiplying these numbers we obtain a final user count of 297,571 users active within the last 30 days.

In a typical day, we see approximately 3,000 to 8,000 new people download Jaxx for the first time on iOS. We think this is largely new people to the blockchain ecosystem, but we know that we also have some users switching to our product from other wallet services.

On the Chrome extension store, the Jaxx application has around 121,000 users. Jaxx was the first Chrome extension wallet available on the market and it continues to be popular, even while we’ve expanded to other platforms.

The Jaxx website has seen an astonishing increase in traffic in 2017. In January of 2017 there were fewer than 20,000 visitors to Jaxx.io. In December of 2017 there were over 650,000 visitors to Jaxx.io.

And 2018 is already off to an incredible start. More people visited our website in the first two weeks of 2018 than visited the site in the first six months of 2017. This reflects a general growth in the number of people getting involved in cryptocurrency and digital assets, as well as increased utility of the Jaxx application. Nearly 60 tokens (and their corresponding communities) are accessible through Jaxx, right now, on all of our platforms.

A typical day sees approximately 100 people using the Jaxx.io website at any given time.

To go along with our user growth, Jaxx has recently moved to a new 15,000 square foot office in downtown Toronto, and we’re quickly adding to the team. If you’d like to be a part of the Jaxx growth story in 2018 please don’t hesitate to reach out to us: [email protected]

Jaxx Development Update for December 1st 2017

Jaxx iOS

The Jaxx development team here at Decentral Inc. has been busy this Fall. We’re proud of our work offering our application across eight platforms and supporting dozens of exciting blockchain projects. We’ve made significant progress on our mission to deliver the best HD wallet in the world.

Infrastructure: We’ve increased and improved the infrastructure we use to operate nodes on the variety of blockchains we support. This added capacity makes Jaxx faster and more reliable than ever. We’ll continue rolling out new infrastructure (servers and systems) in December as expand to meet & exceed demand for Jaxx wallets.

Security Improvements and User Education: We’ve implemented an optional pin code to more strongly protect our user’s assets. This pin secures access in Jaxx to the screens that display the 12-word Masterseed “backup phrase” (BIP39). Users new to the world of blockchain and cryptocurrencies often do not understand the power of the 12-word Masterseed structure we use in Jaxx. We never hold or control our user’s assets; those assets remain on their respective blockchains and the Masterseed is a powerful tool for controlling them. Adding pin functionality has been a great way to help new users understand how to use their Masterseed to pair their wallets across devices and to understand the Masterseed should be backed-up.

Asset Swapping with Shapeshift: We’ve made UI changes to make the swapping of tokens easier and more intuitive. Control of gas prices and clear confirmations have helped make Shapeshifting assets inside Jaxx easy.

Tokens and Coins Supported:

Several of the tokens supported in Jaxx are not available in any other wallet available on iOS. Tokens and Coins currently live in Jaxx include:

AION / Nuco CVC / Civic EOS GUP / Match Pool
ANT / Aragon CFI / CoFoundIt ETH / Ethereum MLN / Melon

Zcash Announces Apple App Store Approval on Jaxx’s iOS Platform

Toronto, ON April 12, 2017 Today marks another historic day for Zcash as the privacy-oriented cryptocurrency announces its approval on the App Store via Jaxx’s iOS platform.

The team behind Zcash includes some of the leading scientists behind the advanced zero-knowledge technology used in the protocol. Together with expert engineers, they are continuously researching and developing improvements to the infrastructure and usability for users and third-party services like Jaxx.

Zooko Wilcox, CEO of the company behind Zcash development, Zerocoin Electric Coin Company, said, “Jaxx is a very simple, easy-to-use wallet and the team behind it has been a pleasure to work with. I’m delighted that thanks to them, hundreds of millions of iPhone users can, for the first time send and receive Zcash from their phones.”

Jaxx was the first wallet to integrate Zcash following its mainnet launch on October 28, 2016, and is thrilled to now have Zcash available on its iOS platform. Apple has a rigorous approval process, especially for allowing cryptocurrencies onto the App Store, and their approval is a clear indication that Zcash is a fast growing and well respected technology.

Anthony Diiorio, CEO of Jaxx, said, “The privacy aspect of their technology meshes really well with Jaxx’s philosophies. We’ve been working on a Zcash-integrated iOS version for a long time and we’re over the moon that Zcash has been approved on the App Store.”

Jaxx also confirmed today that they are in talks with Zcash on the possibility of supporting ZEC shielded addresses. Currently, Jaxx supports transparent addresses which behave similarly to Bitcoin, publishing transaction data publicly to the blockchain. While the mere use of shielded addresses by others provide greater privacy for transparent addresses compared to Bitcoin, official support for shielded addresses in Jaxx will significantly enhance capabilities for users.

“Zcash is a very well run project and it’s been an absolute pleasure to work with Zooko and team. We look forward to continuous collaboration between our two projects, especially for when we implement Zcash’s shielded addresses,” said Diiorio.

In addition to being integrated on all of Jaxx’s platforms, Zcash also announced its integration on a second wallet, SmartWallet, a Brazilian money application.

Jaxx’s iOS version with Zcash is now available for download via jaxx.io or on the Apple App Store.

Zcash CEO Zooko Wilcox and Jaxx CEO Anthony Diiorio are available for interview.

About Zcash:

The Zcash Company is a science-driven team; a combination of academic expertise in computer science and cryptography with security software engineering talent. We are developing the next generation of secure digital currency and blockchain technology through the use of zero-knowledge proofs, to guarantee privacy and confidentiality. We aim to set a new standard for privacy. The Zcash protocol is a decentralized and open-source cryptocurrency offering total payment confidentiality. Unlike Bitcoin, Zcash transactions automatically hide the sender, recipient, and value of all transactions on the blockchain. It is based on peer-reviewed cryptographic research, and built by a world-class, security-focused engineering team. However, as with any new technology, there is risk involved. Currently the team is focused on building and maintaining an open, permissionless system that is viable, robust, and justifiably reliable and secure for users.

About Jaxx:

Jaxx brings Ethereum to iOS. Official 1.0 wallet now available in the App Store

jaxx by decentral

We’re excited to announce that today we’ve published the 1.0 release of Jaxx on the App Store, marking its public debut on Apple devices, as well as being the first Ethereum wallet for iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, and iPod). The 1.0 release will be available for all other Jaxx device at once, in the next couple days as we begin “Seven Days of Jaxx”. More on this later today.ios-jaxx-image

Due to the DDoS attacks we were hit with earlier this week – a first for us – we’ve had to readjust our plan to launch the 1.0 release simultaneously on all platforms and devices. We were forced to spend days and developer resources working through the attacks. Please note that we did not and will never pay ransoms. All sites are now running normally.

Props to our team for getting through the DDoS issues. It should be stressed that these attacks didn’t affect our wallets at all nor compromise any user information, save for briefly limiting access to our bitcoin web wallet, RushWallet. We have no idea if these attacks were competitor-based (as stated in the ransom email we received), but we’ve upped our sites’ security configuration to ensure there’s no recurrence, and at the end of the day, we’re stronger because of this whole ordeal.

The DDoS attacks had already slowed us down considerably, and then we got a call from Jon Southurst at Bitcoin.com, asking about the rumors that Apple was potentially blocking Ethereum wallets on the App Store. I told him this was the first we’d heard of it, and that we’d had a test build uploaded and approved on the App Store for over a week. We thought nothing of it until we saw the actual piece the following day mentioning the rumours.

We huddled, and unanimously decided to shift our priorities immediately to get the app up ASAP to test these rumors. Unfortunately for us, we had made some changes to Jaxx since our test build got approved by Apple, so we had to resubmit and hope for a reapproval – an anxious time. We had no idea if there’d been a change of policy on Apple’s end that might affect our chances. In the interim, we didn’t want to chime in on any rumors, just focus on getting the build released. Finally, we got word of the approval of the 1.0 build at 9:21pm EST last night.

Because of the rush to push the iOS, there are some cosmetic issues with this release some might experience, specifically on smaller screens. We’re not happy about this but it will be improved very soon. We’re also disappointed that we didn’t get to issue all versions of the 1.0 simultaneously as originally envisioned. However, we also felt that this would be a nice treat for Apple fans who’ve been patiently waiting throughout our beta phase to use Jaxx. This release will also serve as a test case for Apple’s stance on Ethereum apps down the road. We’re up, let’s see what happens next.

On the subject of our Jaxx integration for The DAO: this has been a priority, as we believe that accessible integration tools are key to the overall success of the project, but unfortunately these elements won’t be ready for our initial 1.0 releases. This will be ready in plenty of time for voting on the first Proposals.

We are, however, expecting our full-featured DAO integration to roll out during our “Seven Days of Jaxx,” which starts today. This is an initiative we’ve been planning for a while that will showcase foxes, hardware, cubes, integration plans, rockets, DAOs, proposals, and a bunch more goodies..We’re going all out, are super excited and believe the community will be as well. More to follow on this later today.

About Jaxx

For those not familiar with Jaxx, it’s our multi-platform blockchain wallet, developed around a few key principles:

  • Our wallets are design-led, with a focus on intuitive user experience
  • Single screen use (everything you need is on one screen)
  • All security elements / keys etc. are stored client-side, and never sent to any servers
  • A shared codebase ensures a unified experience across devices
  • All wallet assets can be backed up or restored with a single, 12-word mnemonic
  • Our use of common cryptographic standards ensures that you’ll always be able to recover your funds even if Jaxx goes down
  • We’ve removed as many points of friction as possible – no login process or user information is required
  • Jaxx currently supports ether and bitcoin, with full DAO integration to come shortly and many more blockchains and coins to follow.

Jaxx is available for:

  • iOS mobile devices and tablets (Official 1.0)
Android mobile devices and tablets (Beta)
PC, Mac, and Linux desktops (Beta)
Chrome and Firefox browser extensions (Beta)

All versions except for the iOS right now can be downloaded at the Jaxx website.
